Many New Yorkers—ourselves included—gathered outside this past Friday to catch a glimpse of NASA’s Enterprise Space Shuttle which will now call New York City its new home. Attached to a massive Boeing 747, the Enterprise did a few fly-bys up and down the Hudson, allowing New York to admire what will soon become its latest museum attraction.

The Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum will open the doors to the Space Shuttle Pavillion on July 19 and the public will finally be able to see the Enterprise up close. Although it never actually flew in space, the Enterprise was pivotal in demonstrating that a shuttle launched like a rocket could maneuver, fly and land like an airplane—opposed to traditional space rockets (See: Approach and Landing Tests). This will be a temporary home however, since over the next few years, the Intrepid Museum will be building a Science and Technology Center which will permanently house the shuttle.

It was exciting to watch it fly by as we all congregated on rooftops and along the Hudson but we definitely look forward to seeing it up close and personal in the next few months. You can also check out more photos on our Facebook page.

Woo hoo! We are both excited and proud to announce that we’ve been recognized by the New York Addy Awards for our work in creating NewYorkLiveArts.org.

Attention photography and art aficionados! The Umbrella Arts Gallery is featuring an exhibit that you absolutely must check out. Spare Beauty: The Cuban Kitchen by Ellen Silverman features amazing, raw photographs of authentic Cuban kitchens.
Ellen Silverman is typically known for photographing food but on a trip to Havana, she snapped these photos which give us a closer look at the reality of the economic hardships which Cubans face. Our kitchens can say a lot about who we are and although these gritty photographs portray a society struggling to survive under communist rule, they also show us the beauty of the Cuban people as they adapt to the world around them.
The exhibit will be going on for a few more days (through March 31st) and we highly recommend you head to Umbrella Arts Gallery and check it out—you won’t be disappointed.
