Zoo York has teamed up with NY photographer and skater Jay Maldonado. The L.E.S native (he grew up in La Guardia housing projects on Clinton St.) captured beautiful images of a day in the life of New Yorkers for the Locals Only board series.
The stark B&W portraits captured the grit and texture of NYC street corners. He admits when he goes out shooting, he’s looking to capture some sort of moment so he can get across the right feeling. And when you go through his work, he’s spot on.
On shooting with NYC as a backdrop, Jay couldn’t ask for more:
“There are so many different things to shoot, so many different people, buildings. Not every corner is alike and not to mention the great landscape as your back drop. I couldn’t ask for anything better as a backdrop.“

The Roots killed it in Prospect Park on Sunday night, as part of an ongoing series of concerts presented by Celebrate Brooklyn! The show was hosted by Sahr Ngaujah, the star of Broadway’s Fela! and also featured an array of talented opening acts such as Talib Kweli, Blitz the Ambassador, and Bajah + The Dry Eye Crew.
The Roots had played in the Netherlands the previous night, and only been stateside for a few hours, but this didn’t prevent them from delivering a knock-out performance to quite possibly the biggest crowd to hit the Prospect Park Bandshell in recent memory. As a special encore, they brought out Hip Hop legends Nice & Smooth, who proceeded to rock the mic in classic old school fashion. It was truly a night to remember.
Get it while its hot- superstar DJs Jazzy Jeff and Mick Boogie put together a fantastic Summer-themed mix that’s been on heavy rotation at the Squeaky Loft. From songs about summer to songs that just feel like the sunshine season, this multi-genre mix will be sure to make your already great summer even better!

Not sure if the number of good looking gents is going to affect the score of the World Cup, but Spain wins in the attractive scale with an average team score of 5.85 versus Germany’s 5.29. If you were curious the USA has a solid 5.25 average. That’s a nice consolation prize. Go America!
