Philanthropy and Social Media

The holiday season is upon us and—once again—we find ourselves poised to open our wallets and let the shopping frenzy begin. So far, holiday spending is up 15% from last year (comScore) and according to USA Today and the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University, charitable giving has also risen slightly from 2009-2010.

This should come as no surprise since brands and organizations are making it easier than ever for consumers to be charitable. In our research, we came across many organizations harnessing the power of social media to give back to the community and these are a few that we liked.

Social Good Through Social Media

Many of us don’t realize how lucky we are to be healthy and to be able to put food on the table for our families. That’s why we are always glad to see businesses contributing to charitable organizations…especially on the web. Nowadays companies are taking to sites like YouTube and social networks like Facebook, to accomplish this goal. What better way to reach 500 million people? (Thanks Zuck!) The following are a few we found particularly intriguing:

youtube2

Most recently YouTube has partnered with various charities in order to help them gain exposure and funding (www.youtube.com/give). The best part is you can contribute just by watching their videos. 60% of the ad revenue will go to their respective charities and users can also donate directly as there are links provided on the site as well. So share this with your friends and help those in need, one video at a time.

In Q4 of 2010, McDonald’s held a charity promotion where $1 would be donated to Ronald McDonald House Charities each time someone checked in using Facebook Places (up to $50,000). McDonald’s has always done well with fund raising for their charities and it makes us smile to see that they’ve taken to the web to continue their endeavors in the digital realm.

ESPN typically raises money for the V Foundation for Cancer Research. You can donate right through their Facebook tab or follow the link and donate directly through the V Foundation site.

revlon

Lastly, Revlon (Squeaky client) also has a Facebook tab dedicated to their charitable activities. Right now, by purchasing their Super Lustrous Lipstick through drugstore.com, 10% of all proceeds go to fight women’s cancer. They also continue to raise money for cancer with upcoming events like the Revlon Walk/Run for Women in April 2011.

2010 NYC Twestival

Last night Squeaky attended NYC Twestival hosted at Hudson Hotel’s Good Units. The event was held to raise awareness and funds for Concern WorldWide, a non-governmental organization dedicated to the reduction of suffering and elimination of poverty.

Despite the high drink prices (which did not go to charity) good times were had by all and everyone helped to contribute close to $20,000. Whenever you can participate in a great cause and meet up with old and new friends it’s a win for all.

Charity poker event to benefit the Buoniconti fund to cure paralysis

poker4life

Poker4Life, a past client of Squeaky Wheel Media, is holding a charity poker event in NYC to benefit the Buoniconti fund to cure paralysis. This is a great cause! Whether you’re a poker fanatic or a casual weekend player, Squeaky recommends going. And, if you don’t like poker still go.  You can get a pretty nice buzz at the cocktail reception.
