Digiday:Social – Insights Into Social Media Marketing

Today, Squeaky’s Marketing Director, Jacob Ramos, attended Digiday:Social, an event showcasing successful strategies and insights on how to leverage social media within your overall marketing efforts. As this was a high-level event much of the content was meant to provide baseline education and resources to brand marketers and agency executives who are looking to take the next step in integrating specific social media platforms and communication strategies.

Charlene Li, the Founder of Altimeter Group, was the first presenter of the morning giving a keynote which focused on open and transparent leadership through the new social order. While her methods were unique at the core her message was something that has been central to any brand and it’s c-suites looking to integrate social media into their organization.

- Align your openness strategy with your unique goals

- Prepare a proper communication strategy for engaging consumers in advance

- Understand your brand’s value of each consumer

- Prepare to fail

And, above all focus on the relationships not the technology.

While we were only able to stay for the morning sessions left with one key point we found continues to resonate among social media marketing. Ready for this… no matter how many social media marketing events and conferences you attend  there will NOT be a pot of marketing gold waiting for you at the end. There is NO silver bullet. At the end of the day as a brand you have to make sure you have the proper internal team or the agency partners around you that can align your realistic goals with the appropriate platforms whether that be Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Digg, Reddit, etc. If social media is indeed the next step in marketing then it is important to hire people that are educated and genuinely interested in the space because at the end of the day social media is based on garnering relationships, and you can’t fake authenticity.

Lessons Learned from DigiDay Social

Yesterday, Squeaky Wheel Media had the opportunity to attend DigiDay Social at the W New York.

Scott Monty, Digital and Multimedia Communications Manager at Ford Motor Company, gave an insightful keynote presentation on the importance of understanding and crafting your message through social media platforms. The key take away that is often overlooked is that the ultimate goal is to harness human relationships, not just understanding how to use the platforms, Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, etc.

Squeaky also had the opportunity to chat with some of the speakers at the cocktail networking event and had great conversations with both Joe Marchese, Co-founder of SocialVibe, and Elizabeth Pigg, VP of Media Strategy for Edelman Digital. There was great discussion on mobile and the roll it will play in the future of social media. We see lots of geolocation services popping up in the future coming on the heels of semi-successful mobile applications like dodgeball (before it got shut down by Google). Look out for similar geolocation services popping up like foursquare.
