Free Friday: Spotify

The Squeaky loft always has some good tunes playing. From Classic Rock to R&B we listen to just about everything while we work.

That’s why we were excited about Spotify’s U.S. release. Sure Pandora is great for discovering new music but Spotify takes it to the next level, allowing you to find any song your heart desires and play it as many times as you wish. You can also create playlists, share with your Facebook friends and browse new music.

Although the free version has advertisements, it is totally worth it. Head over to their site and sign up for an invite or see if your eligible for an instant account here.

Free Friday: Red Bull Creation

With every project that Squeaky tackles—regardless of the client or what industry they belong to—creativity is the key to its success.

This is why were excited to discover that Red Bull is having a creative competition this weekend in our very own backyard. If you want to witness a true battle of creativity head over to McCarren Park in Brooklyn for the Red Bull Creation competition.

This event challenges contestants to build creations designed to move the weight of a person (100 lbs.) from point A to point B with the catch being that they cannot use any type of fossil fuels.

So if you’re life could use a little creativity and innovation check out the Red Bull Creation competition this Sunday and witness a battle of the brains. It’s a free event that is open to the public and should be an awesome display of creativity at its finest. Enjoy!

Free Friday: Wheels of Steel

As an interactive digital agency, we love seeing people use the power of code to create new and innovative web applications. Using a combination of CSS3, Javascript, HTML and a little Flash, a programmer named Scott Schiller (@Schill) did just that and managed to create a digital copy of the classic Technics 1200 Series Turntable for the web.

Pulling in music from SoundCloud, WheelsOfSteel.net allows you to do just about everything a real DJ can do on the 1s and 2s. You can throw on different tracks, mix’em up, tweak your sound settings and—if you’re running it on a powerful enough machine—you can even scratch (Safari 5 or Chrome 12 on OSX work best).

Although this is merely a prototype (Schiller still believes it needs work), the various elements of code come together quite nicely to produce a seamless experience that can have anyone DJing in no time. Mr. Schiller breaks down how he went about overcoming various obstacles to create this stunning piece of web technology in his blog.
