IFC Center Studio Ghibli Series

What are you doing this weekend? It’s the last week of the IFC Center’s Studio Ghibli series. If you’re not familiar with the Japanese animation powerhouse, it is famous for its whimsical and magical films such as Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle and My Neighbor Totoro, which won heaps of praise from Roger Ebert. We at Squeaky love to celebrate the diversity of our team, and jump on cultural opportunities like this when they pop up in New York City. So go, buy your tickets, and make sure to get there early (the theaters fill up very quickly).

3 Upcoming Events You Shouldn’t Miss

As social media continues to dominate the web, it’s important for us—as marketers and social enthusiasts—to keep up with the latest updates, trends and common practices. We are always scouring the web for the latest information and news but the best way to learn is usually from other like-minded individuals. Luckily, there is never a shortage of events/conferences to attend here in New York City and we’ve highlighted a few upcoming ones you may want to consider attending…

Ten Years Later…

It’s kind of hard to believe that it’s already been 10 years since the September 11th attacks. That morning, our CEO was walking across the West Side Highway when the second plane screamed over his head into the tower. So many New Yorkers have stories of loss and remembrance and in these stories we find the common theme of what it is to be a New Yorker (or an American)—grit, gumption and resolve.

We cheer to the rebirth of the new World Trade Center but we so miss the site of the twin towers and the innocence we all felt before.

This weekend there will be a multitude of events held throughout the city commemorating the event (check out a list of them here). There’s also an iPad-exclusive application surrounding the past, present and future of the World Trade Center which will remain free until September 12th. You should also check out the NY Times 9/11: The Reckoning a special report on the costs and consequences of 9/11 (very well designed).

Marking Infinity at the Guggenheim

This city never sleeps because there is always something to do. Not only that, but most of the time—if you keep your eyes open—you can do it without breaking the bank.

If you don’t have plans this labor day weekend you should check out some of the great museums New York City has to offer. Specifically, we’d recommend visiting the Marking Infinity exhibit at the Guggenheim which showcases the work of Lee Ufan.

Born in Korea in 1936, Ufan is credited with contributing to the development of contemporary art in Japan and his work is featured in museums all over the globe including Belgium, France, Japan and Korea. This exhibit marks his first North American retrospective and is definitely a must-see while it’s around.

So if you don’t have plans this weekend, head to the Guggenheim and witness this amazing collection of paintings and sculptures. And remember that if you go on Saturday, you pay what you wish (it’s normally $18).

The Highline: Part Deux

The opening of the Highline’s second section is right around the corner and all of us here at Squeaky are psyched since its newest entrances will literally be, around the corner.
